How we compared them

Every entry was checked against its current App Store listing on 2026-09-22. Where a listing is ambiguous or contradicts itself, we say so rather than resolving it in the game's favour.

• Native iOS: it must run on iPhone and iPad directly, not stream or remote-play from a computer.
• Real online co-op: separate people on separate devices, in real time — not just two thumbs on one screen.
• Player count: exactly two, or genuinely more than two.
• Solo route: whether one person can make progress without a partner.
• Business model: price, ads and in-app purchases, described identically for every game including our own.

The nine games compared

A note on how we describe money. Pippin Plaza is free, shows ads, and sells optional in-app purchases — the same description we give the other free games here. One of those purchases, No Forced Ads, removes automatic interstitial ads; voluntary rewarded ads remain available. Pippin Plaza is not an ad-free game, and we have not given it a friendlier monetisation label than the titles it competes with.

Pippin Plaza: Online Co-op

Pippin Plaza is a native iOS co-op puzzle platformer built around a private room code: you create a room, share the code, and 2 to 4 people play together in real time on their own devices. The campaign is 53 numbered handmade quests plus a separate tutorial, built on keys, doors, moving platforms and timing that only works if the team coordinates. Alone, you control two Pippins and switch between them when a puzzle needs both.

The only game in this comparison that combines native iOS, 2D side-on puzzle-platforming, real online play for more than two people, and a solo route. It is also ours, which is why its monetisation is described in the same words as everyone else's: free, ads, optional purchases.

Fire and Water Online Co-op

Seller on the App Store: ALSA GAMES · App Store

A mobile take on the Fireboy-and-Watergirl formula, and the most complete free option for a pair. One character survives fire, the other water; you combine them across 200+ handcrafted temple levels. The listing describes four modes: online co-op with friends or matchmaking, a 1v1 duel mode, a solo mode where you control both heroes, and local co-op on one device.

The strongest free pick if there are exactly two of you. It will not scale to three or four.

BOKURA

Seller on the App Store: Kodansha Ltd. · App Store

A paid, two-player-only puzzle adventure where each player sees a different world on their own screen — the same character may appear to one of you as an animal and to the other as a robot. Two people, two devices, no exceptions. Kodansha's listing is explicit that the game includes no voice chat, so remote pairs need Discord or a phone call alongside it.

The most interesting design here, and the least flexible. Two people who enjoy talking through a problem will get the most out of it.

Pepelo - Adventure CO-OP Game

Pepelo runs real-time online co-op for exactly two players through a room code, across 50 levels of buttons, moving platforms and timing. It is genuinely cooperative, but the view is 3D isometric rather than 2D side-on, which changes how you read a jump. An offline mode lets one player control both characters. The listing notes the first 10 levels are free and the rest unlock through a purchase.

A good 3D alternative for two. Not the one to pick if the 2D side-on view is the part you actually want.

Online Cats – Multiplayer Park

A free key-and-door puzzle game, and structurally the closest thing here to PICO PARK's shape. It is worth being careful with the claims: the App Store description says it “can be played offline and online for 2-8 players” in one line and advertises “Multiplayer for up to 10 Online Players” a few lines later. We could not verify working live multiplayer with other people, and its App Store rating is among the lowest in this group.

Marked unverified rather than recommended or dismissed. The listing does not settle its own player count.

Animal Park 2 – Puzzle Games

From the same developer as Online Cats, and built on the same keys-and-doors idea. Its listing opens by saying the game “can be played offline” and then uses online and multiplayer language further down, without describing a room code, invite or matchmaking flow. We found no clear evidence of live online co-op.

Treat it as a single-player puzzle game with multiplayer-sounding copy until the listing says otherwise.

Level Devil - NOT A Troll Game

A precision trap platformer with 240+ levels, built on the joke that the level is actively trying to kill you: floors vanish, ceilings drop, spikes appear where you just looked. It is very good at that. What it is not is an online co-op game — the listing offers a local two-player mode on one device and nothing more.

Included because people looking for co-op platformers on iPhone keep finding it. Great solo; not a remote-teamwork game.

Crossy Road Castle

Seller on the App Store: Hipster Whale Pty Ltd · App Store

Crossy Road Castle supports one to four players, either on one device with game controllers or across several devices. Its App Store listing and official site confirm that multi-device play, but neither says whether those devices can be in different places or must be nearby, so we have not counted it as confirmed online co-op. It is an endless, procedurally generated tower climb rather than a set of hand-built puzzle rooms — closer to arcade chaos than to a key-and-door puzzle. It requires an Apple Arcade subscription.

Excellent four-player co-op and no ads at all, thanks to Arcade. A different genre from PICO PARK, though.

Crunchyroll: Pikuniku

Seller on the App Store: Crunchyroll, LLC · App Store

A well-liked physics puzzle-adventure with a distinctive art style, now distributed through Crunchyroll's Game Vault. Its cooperative content is a set of custom local multiplayer levels, not online play. The download is free but the game requires a Crunchyroll Mega or Ultimate membership, and it needs iOS 18 or later.

A strong single-player game with local co-op attached. Not an answer to the online question.

Which one fits your group?

The honest answer depends almost entirely on how many people you are and whether you are in the same room.

Pippin Plaza is our game, so here is the detail rather than the sales pitch.

• 53 numbered handmade quests, plus a separate tutorial. The tutorial sits outside the numbered run and does not count toward the 53.
• Online co-op for 2 to 4 players. You create a private room and share the code; everyone plays on their own device, in real time.
• Solo play by controlling two Pippins. Alone, you work through the quest campaign by switching between two characters when a puzzle needs both — you are not driving them simultaneously.
• Rush, Survival and Marathon are separate modes beyond the quest campaign.
• Free to download, with ads and optional in-app purchases. No subscriptions. The optional No Forced Ads purchase removes automatic forced ads; voluntary rewarded ads remain.
